Homestead, Oregon
Homestead, Oregon (1,675 alt) is located a few miles north of Oxbow on the Hells Canyon Reservoir. I wish I could find out more information about this place but there just is not very much written about it. The last couple of years I have been driving up to Hells Canyon dam and staying at a campsite just south of the dam. The canyon is fun to drive through and in the evening the colors are beautiful as the sun sets. This year when I crossed back over to the Oregon side at Oxbow I drove up to Homestead. I think most of the old town is now under water now but I did run across this old school house . I would love to know its history. If you can tell me anything about this old building I would be very interested in hearing from you. Homestead is at the eastern edge of the copper belt. During World War I the town was the scene of extnsive mining operations. Mining ceased in 1922. The town was the Pearce homestead and was home of the Iron Dyke Mine. J.H. Pearson was the first postmaster.
