Whitney, Oregon
The ghost town of Whitney as of October 2001. Sumpter's narrow-gauge railroad reached Whitney in June of 1901. Whitney once had four saloons, two hotels, and two general stores. For a period of ten years Whitney was a boomtown and some sources say the population reached as high as 100-200 people, but by 1910 only 50 people remained. The railroad was abandoned in 1947 and the town died.
The Whitney saw mill as of October 2001. Built by the Nibly Lumber Company in 1911. Another source says the mill was built by the Oregon Lumber Company and implies an early construction date for the mill. This mill once employed seventy-five people and supplied nearby mining towns with lumber. There was also a fire at the saw mill in 1918. References:
